David R. Cockman, Retired

David R. Cockman has been in the general practice of law for more than 55 years in Raleigh with concentration in corporate law, wills and estate planning and the legal problems of individual clients. He first was a partner in the firm of Dupree, Weaver, Horton, Cockman & Alvis. After Franklin T. Dupree, Jr. was appointed as a Judge to the Federal District Court, he headed the firm of Cockman, Alvis, Akins and Aldridge. He then practiced solo for twenty five years and became Of Counsel to this firm in February, 2002.

David attended Catawba College for two years. After his sophomore year, he served in the United States Army and was sports editor of the Eighth Army Daily Octogram in Yokohoma, Japan. After his tour of duty, he graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in Radio, Motion Pictures and Television. He worked for four years as the sports director of WTNC in Thomasville, North Carolina, before attending UNC Law School where he graduated in 1957.

Mr. Cockman is a member of the Wake County, North Carolina, the American Bar Associations and the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers Association. He is a permanent member of the Judicial Conference, United States Judges of the Forth Circuit. He is admitted to practice in the Eastern and Middle District of North Carolina as well as the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

David served in the Wake County Chapter of the American National Red Cross for more than 30 years and was Chapter Chairman for three years. He served as Area Governor of Toastmasters International and held many offices the Raleigh Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and was President of the North Carolina State Elks Association. He was honored with the Thad Eure Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor given by that association. David also was a member of the Raleigh Jaycees, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Cockman was inducted into the North Carolina Bar Association’s General Practice Hall of Fame on June 24, 2010.

Community Involvement
